REVIEW: Smokin’ Po Boys BBQ, Winder, Barrow County

Smokin’ Po Boys BBQ, Winder, Barrow County
Yes, Melanie and I love our BBQ. And yes, we write about BBQ a heck of lot specially in the summertime when it just seems like BBQ goes with every meal like sweet tea does. The dilemma is finding some really good Q. Now we’ve got our favorites, but living in the sticks means you have to drive a long way to get what you want sometimes.

One of our more popular stories for 2016 has been our list of Top 10 BBQ Restaurants in Atlanta  ‎and as soon as we ran the story, we began to get emails and comments from the Winder faithful about Smokin’ Po Boys BBQ. Ok, we get it – so we made our way up Hwy 81 and onto Winder.

Smokin’ Po Boys BBQ opens at 5pm on the weeknights but when we showed up at 6pm and were told they were already out of ribs, you can imagine our disappointment. We made due though with Melanie ordering the smoked chicken with potato salad and baked beans, and I ordered the hot wings, pulled pork, potato salad, baked beans, and Brunswick Stew. Both meals come with Texas-style garlic buttered bread.

There are five sauces, from sissy to spicy, each with their own flavor and style. I was looking for something that was mustard and/or vinegar based and Sassy was close to that but not quite what I was looking for. I think most people will end up enjoying Sissy or Sweety, while those looking for a bolder flavor will enjoy Spicy as I did.

This meat is smoky – I mean powerful smoky. Even with wings taste smoky. It’s a strong and pervasive flavor that finds its way into everything they serve even the sides. The sides were some of the best sides we’ve ever had at a BBQ joint. The Brunswick Stew was rich and beefy, hardly like any Brunswick Stew you will ever find.

It’s tough for us to pull down a complete review without the ribs. It’s really the one dish we judge a BBQ place by so we’ll need reserve overall judgment until another visit, but what we had was among the most awesome BBQ in town and Smokin’ Po Boys BBQ can hold their own against Atlanta’s top BBQ talent. Guten appetit!

Well, plan on increasing that gas budget. When you go back, and you will the ribs are going to throw you over the top. We found this place two years ago, and now we are hooked. Now we compare every Q to Smokin Po Boy’s. Haven’t found one yet to hold up to it.

I live in the area and they do have good BBQ……but the best BBQ in the area as are a ribs go is THE IRON PIG in Jefferson GA. Their smoker is a giant iron pig and you go up too this little stand to order and sit on picnic tables. They grab your ribs right off the smoker and they fall right off bone. Beats smoke and possibly boys by a long shot

Smokin’ Po Boys is terrible. I’ll admit, I haven’t been in a while, but when I went during lunch when I worked in that area, they were always out of the food that we asked for. The waitress (at the time) would bring us something different and not tell us that it would be different. My example is, I always ordered the Chicken Breast (white meat – chopped). I specified that I didn’t want dark meat. I got dark meat anyway. I would tell her that I didn’t order dark meat and she would say, “well that’s all we have”. The last time I went was when there were FEATHERS still attached to the chicken wing. No, I’m not kidding.

Robin, It takes a lot of moving parts to create a good restaurant. Clearly, there’s room for improvement in the areas you mentioned. While we tend to focus more on taste and flavor, there are other metrics to be considered that contribute to the overall customer experience. Thanks for the comment.

Their BBQ is awesome, but I must say, if you do not try the tacos (which are not on the menu, you must ask), you’re not being fair to yourself. Pulled pork with slaw and salsa, topped of with a squirt of “Sneaky” sauce, and you’ll smile!

    Love this place!
