The downtown area of Duluth has undergone a transformation over the past years and that continues with the addition of Dreamland BBQ in a beautiful new building. Dreamland BBQ got its start in Tuscaloosa in 1958. Since then they’ve grown to nine locations in three states. The former Gwinnett location in Peachtree Corners burned to the ground a few years ago and it seems the Duluth location was under construction forever as Atlanta BBQ fans waited impatiently for this restaurant to open. It was a hot, sticky night and we were pleased to arrive and experience the cold AC in Dreamland BBQ in Duluth. This new restaurant has a very open floorplan that combines that retro BBQ-joint feel with a contemporary restaurant layout and setting. We were seated right away, met our server, and soon had our refreshments. I should add that our server was AWESOME and provided excellent service throughout the meal.

We got started with Bar-B-Que Onion Dip starter, which consist of homemade potato chips along with the Onion Dip. While we enjoyed the Onion Dip, we all expected the potato chips to be served hot and were disappointed when we found this not to be the case. While this wasn’t billed on the menu as hot, for some reason when you see “house made bbq chips” that expectation does pop into your mind.

Miss Melanie and I ordered the Combo Plates. She ordered the ribs and smoked chicken with baked beans and potato salad, while I chose the ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken, Brunswick Stew, and Mac N Cheese. Laurie ordered the half slab of ribs with green beans and Mac N Cheese. The first thing we noticed was the Combo Plates feature the baby back ribs, where the rib plate that Laurie ordered feature the larger spare ribs.

The baby back ribs were a disappointment. There wasn’t much meat on them, and what was there was tough, crispy, and you had to gnaw on the bone to get the meat off. The sides were satisfactory, but traditional in every sense of the word. There was nothing special, different, or unique – it’s just plain traditional BBQ. The pulled pork and smoked chicken were both done nicely and we have no complaints whatsoever with either, but the smoked chicken really lacked the smoky flavor that we’ve come to expect among Atlanta BBQ.

If the meal was lackluster, the dessert picked us up and made us smile. We really couldn’t decide, so we got the Famous Banana Pudding, Chocolate Dream, and the Peach Cobbler. Each was sinfully delicious and lifted our spirits as I paid the bill of almost $100 including tip.

I was a frequent visitor to Dreamland BBQ in Peachtree Corners since it was close to our office. This visit was not reflective of my memory of my visits there. Dreamland BBQ is traditional BBQ, and as we’ve become accustomed to Atlanta’s trendy BBQ spots, it’s difficult to lose that expectation.

From purely a digital marketing perspective, I was disappointed to see this location not in Google Maps, the restaurant has not been entered into Zomato (formerly Urbanspoon), and their website still says the location is coming soon. Fortunately, their Twitter feed @dreamlandduluth does have a pulse, and is updated frequently.

    We thought the ribs were too much work to enjoy; the meat should have fallen off the bone. The sides weren’t hot enough, and the portion of the appetizer was small

    My husband and I went separately. My ribs were delicious. His were over done and chewy. The manager bright him 3 mire ribs and they were not quite right either. I’d say give this location a little bit more time to settle in before making a decision.

    My experience was outstanding. They opened for the Duluth Fall Festival volunteers several weeks ago. It was a trial run for the new waitstaff and the restaurant before they opened to the public. Mine was outstanding from the appetizer (fried Okra) to the entree ( full slab of ribs) side was a very large salad , dessert was the famous banana pudding all was very good. Service was impecable. I went to the PC location several times and the food was not as good as what I got at the Duluth location. I have had several friends that have been there 3+ times since opening and all their orders were top notch. I prefer my own BBQ but if I had to pick a place in the area I would go back here over Sonny’s, Jim and Nick’s

    If you are not willing to give this place another review then go else where. Stay away from our neck of the woods. Never have agreed with your reviews anyway.

    My husband and I recently ate at this location for the first time. We ordered the regular barbecue sandwich with a side. My husband had the baked beans and I had mac & cheese. The sandwiches were at room temperature. I sent mine back and requested it be hot. Sandwich came back hot, however, barbecue pork was mushy and very salty. To me , this was a result of over brining the meat. It was also fatty; after a few bites, I did not care to eat anymore. The mac & cheese was tasty; my husband commented the beans tasted straight out of the can. We might give this place another chance, but not for a few more months. I would take Shane’s or Sonny’s over this anytime. Sorry!
