REVIEW: 2 Dog Café, Gainesville, Hall County

I was pretty excited about going to 2 Dog Café. It’d been since 2010 [Read the 2 Dog review from 2010] since we were there last. In six years, not much had changed. When we arrived we were seated right away and they had a good crowd throughout the evening.

We got started with a Crab Cake appetizer. The crab cakes alone were bland and devoid of seasoning, but the accompanying mustard sauce helped but the consistency of the crab meat failed to thrill us. The meat wasn’t light and flaky, more puréed and packed.

I ordered the special which was a 3 Cheese Lasagna. I enjoyed it but I think would have been much better with meat. Having just cheese in this dish was like eating a bowl of goo. Fortunately, it was seasoned properly and had a very nice flavor.

Melanie ordered the Shrimp and Grits that was accompanied with a BBQ sauce. She was disappointed with this dish overall because of the lack of seasoning during the preparation. The shrimp had no seasoning and neither did the grits. Both of these items are bland on their own and need seasoning to make it palatable. Melanie also noted that some cheese in the grits would have been a splendid addition. The BBQ sauce was vinegar-based and Melanie didn’t care for it at all.

The Grilled Asparagus served with this dish was burned rather than grilled and inedible. Very disappointing. I really wasn’t sure whether the smoky smell I detected was coming off the asparagus or the cigarette smoke emitting from the servers. If you’re a smoker you may not notice, but non-smokers can smell when a person reeks of cigarette smoke and it is both unpleasant and unappetizing.

The saving grace from this meal was the dessert. We ordered a slice of Chocolate Cream pie to share and took a slice of Peanut Butter Pie home for later. Both were exquisite and I would have to recommend dessert even if you normally don’t partake of dessert normally. This will cause you to make an exception.

We left 2 Dog Café a lot less excited than we arrived. Perhaps we caught them on an off night. If you’re a 2 Dog diner, we’d love to hear about your experience there. Guten appetit!

Thank you so much for coming by to see us again. I am sad to read that we were a disappointment. I have discussed the asparagus with the kitchen and hopefully solved that problem in the future! Thank you for bringing that to my attention. The crab cakes I assume would be an individual taste. They tend to be popular so I’m not sure how to move forward with that. The Lasagna is also an individual taste. I am happy you did like the seasoning. The pasta is made in house. Please let Melonie know that she is welcome to add cheese to her grits anytime. We have a ‘toppings” choice in our dinner menu that allows you to add anything you like to a meal. Even meat to the lasagna. We do this so we have more dishes to offer vegetarians as well as meat eaters. I noticed that the BBQ sauce was on the side of the plate on the Shrimp and Grits in the picture. I spoke with my server and she said that you had ordered the BBQ sauce on the side. The shrimp is normally cooked in the sauce and then the whole dish is served with the sauce drizzled over it. If the sauce is ordered on the side, it will definitely change the seasoning of the dish. I am so sorry your server didn’t make you aware of that when you ordered. I do have to take up for my server in the area of smoking however. She is not a smoker. Our servers don’t smoke during shift. I myself am not a smoker and do not care to smell it either. We smoke our meats out back three days and nights a week. When the servers take the recycling out, they have to walk past the smoker. I am so sorry the smell was so strong. I haven’t figured out a way around it yet. The recycling gets really full during shift so my apologies for that. In any case, thank you for your comments and for visiting us.
