REVIEW: TWO Urban Licks, Old Fourth Ward, Atlanta
If you like the industrial chic dining experience, you’re going to love TWO Urban Licks. If it hadn’t been around for a while, I’d swear this place was underground. I followed a postal freight truck into the back of this urban industrial complex and then felt like I was driving up to a freight dock when I drove up to the valet. It was weird in a really cool sort of way.
We made reservations early (if I could put this in a 32pt font without it looking ugly, I would) so we went right in to our table. Next time though, we won’t get seated anywhere near the large window in the dining room on a cold night. On both ends, lies an entrance where every time the door opened, we got hit with a cold blast of wind. I came to find out later that the patio where these entrances are, is located right on Atlanta’s Beltline and during the summer the patio is a favorite hangout spot for Atlantans to people-watch.
The bread service at TWO Urban Licks is awesome. The bread is homemade and served to your table hot with a warm ricotta cheese. Be careful – you could end up pulling a grandma move and sneaking the bread into your purse if you’re not careful!
We got started with the Pimento Cheese Hush Puppies – hmmm, SO GOOD! The green chili jam is H-O-T but I poured it on as thick as I could get it. The flavor of this dish was dynamite and the amount of batter was perfect. If this was what we could expect – we couldn’t wait for our entrées to arrive.
Melanie ordered the Brisket that is smoked and covered with a red wine jus. Accompanying it is a Butternut Squash Hash that Melanie really enjoyed. The brisket contains a lot of fat, but that’s what gives it that awesome flavor. It’s a nice-sized piece of meat though, so there’s plenty of meat left for you to enjoy. The Brisket is so tender and you will enjoy savoring each bite. Melanie also ordered the Creamed Kale and she though it was the best prepared kale she’d ever experienced. It was prepared wonderfully, like it was creamed spinach.
I chose the Bar Steak that comes with Green Beans and Mashed Potatoes. I also had to try the White Cheddar Mac and Cheese and the Hoppin John. The Bar Steak was cooked perfectly and it was goodness and tenderness in every bite. The accompanying chimichurri sauce was nothing short of excellent and the perfect complement to the meat. The White Cheddar Mac and Cheese was as addictive as our server promised although we did add some salt and pepper to it. The Hoppin John was a new experience for me. Our server described it as similar to a “dirty rice”, but with tomatoes. Perfect description and it was a perfect dish. Like Brunswick Stew, there’s about a million different variations of this, so I intend on trying them all from this point forward.
You cannot leave Two Urban Licks without dessert. We chose the Lemon Semolina Cake and it was dee-lisch. It reminded us somewhat of our almond cake because the semolina has that same coarseness that separates it from a traditional flour. The Lemon Buttermilk Sherbet will shock you with how tart the taste of the lemon is in it.
Our server was MAGNIFICENT! Throughout the entire meal, he treated us like royalty! He was just fantastic and having that kind of service made our evening. He explained the menu thoroughly, and even made some great recommendations. I especially like the way he validated our menu selections and he continually expressed confidence that we were going to have a great night. He checked in on us regularly, even though we could see he had several tables and one of those was a large party.
TWO Urban Licks is one of our MUST EAT places in Atlanta. The service is excellent, The food is out of this world. The vibe in the restaurant is very cool and you’ll also love the music (which is set at the perfect volume). You’ve got to go to TWO Urban Licks! Guten appetit!
