REVIEW: Smoke Ring, Downtown Atlanta

In the shadow of Atlanta‘s new Mercedes Benz Stadium and a short walk from Philips Arena is Smoke Ring, a barbecue destination that just might become your new favorite. Yes, Melanie and I consider ourselves BBQ aficionados, especially having just come off of the Sip & Swine BBQ Festival under the direction of the famed Kansas City Barbecue Society. As KCBS members, we’re just waiting for a judging class to open up so we can get certified, but we still consider ourselves pretty darn good when it comes to evaluating the merits of smoked pork and chicken.

This was a special night because we had another couple, friends of ours whom we hadn’t seen in years, join us for dinner. We dropped the ladies off curbside and parked the car. Parking is free in the garage for guests of Smoke Ring. We were fortunate to be seated in the booth right in the center of the restaurant that is made from an old revolving door. It’s very cool and extremely comfortable and intimate.

Smoke Ring was PACKED on this Saturday night and our server was working his tail off. We were in no hurry of course, because we had years of catching up to do with our friends. We got started with a couple orders of Deviled Eggs and some Fried Pickles. The Deviled Eggs were delightful and topped with a spicy filling on top of the egg. The Fried Pickles were created from the World’s Largest Pickle contest, because I cannot recall ever seeing a pickle quite so large!

We ordered our entrées and settled into our dinner conversation. Smoke Ring is quite the brouhaha, particularly on a Saturday night when you have several tables with large parties. Our booth though did insulate us somewhat from the crowd and we enjoyed our time together. When our meal arrived, we gazed in amazement. It all looked fantastic!


I dug right into my ribs. Let me tell you – it’s a crime to put sauce on these ribs. The seasoning they use and the flavor of the meat is so good, you really don’t need any sauce. The real surprise for me was the potato salad. It had a strong horseradish flavor and quite a bite. Melanie LOVED her ribs and wings! “The best BBQ I’ve ever had”, she said. She also enjoyed her brussel sprouts which were flash fried. She says “we’re definitely coming back here!”. The first Sunday of the month, they do a Bluegrass Brunch complete with bottomless mimosas and half price wines.

Smoke Ring was fabulous! The ambience is fun and boisterous and the warm wood tones make you want to snuggle in and stay for a while. It’s just a awesome place for some of the best barbeque in town. It’s a MUST VISIT for Atlanta restaurants! Guten appetit!
