REVIEW: The Tavern at Phipps, Phipps Plaza, Buckhead, Atlanta, Fulton
The Tavern at Phipps was an unplanned adventure but one I can look back fondly on. My co-worker and I were looking for as solid lunch and we sure found it.
Parking is at a premium at Phipps Plaza so unless you’re just lucky plan on getting some steps in. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed but we must have come at the exact perfect moment to be shown to a very nice table right next to the man with the loudest laughter in Buckhead. Someone was having a good time and like the scene in When Harry met Sally I couldn’t help but think “I’ll have what he’s having”.
I had my eye on the Carnegie Deli Pastrami Reuben and my friend Angel was in the mood for a Philly Cheesesteak. Angel ordered fries with his but I stuck with the Kosher pickle.
While Melanie is convinced I must have some Latin blood in my Germanic background because of my love for all things spicy, I am convinced there is a New Yorker buried deep within me struggling to get out. I can’t help it. I love Reubens and the more pastrami on there the better.
When our meal arrived though, I couldn’t reach for my iPhone fast enough – I was stunned by the enormity of this lunch sandwich. This was not what I had expected and I wasn’t sure if I was prepared for the task that lay ahead of me. Pastrami was piled high, topped with a generous portion of sauerkraut and then covered in cheese.
I was about halfway through and thought to myself “I’m full, I’ll save the rest for later” but I kept picking at it while Angel was desperately trying to finish his sandwich. One piece of pastrami at a time, I saw the pile dwindle down to nothing. It was so good, there was no stopping. Angel thought his Philly Cheesesteak was awesome and but couldn’t finish his meal.
If you are a pastrami lover like I am, I have found the place for you! The Tavern at Phipps was hopping for lunch but this didn’t impact their impeccable service nor the prompt delivery of our excellent lunch. Good times! Guten appetit!
