REVIEW: Smokebelly BBQ, Buckhead, Atlanta, Fulton
Our regular readers know Melanie and I are avid BBQ lovers. We’d been too Smokebelly BBQ before but always on an unofficial basis. We decided to change that when we added Smokebelly BBQ to our list of 20 BEST ATLANTA RESTAURANTS TO VISIT IN 2016.
It was a weeknight and Melanie had joined me for a late meeting with clients in Buckhead. By the time the meeting ended, we were ravenous and in search of a place nearby. I pulled up Microsoft OneNote on my Apple Watch and went to ON THE RADAR and found Smokebelly BBQ. We were on our way.
We were seated right away, soon had our drinks and were ready to order. Melanie loves Pimento Cheese and when I saw they were available served with pork rinds I questioned the server. He told me the pork rinds were indeed made in-house and the decision was made. It’s also a super value at just 4.50!
Melanie choose one of her perennial favorites, Smoked Chicken Wings and a side salad. I went with the Combo Plate with Pulled Pork and 1/4 rack of Baby Back Ribs.
From the moment I took my first bite, I was sold on Smokebelly BBQ. The ribs were served as a dry rub, for you to apply the sauce of your choice. There’s several on the table but more to choose from at a central “sauce station”. In my opinion though, it would be a crime to put sauce on these ribs. The meat tasted like ham – sweet, tender, juicy and full of a rich smoky flavor. The rib has just a hint of a kick that keeps things interesting. Melanie’s Smoked Chicken Wings were just as good as the ribs and the Pulled Pork kept the family tradition heading towards a holy trinity of BBQ.
I thought the Brunswick Stew was some of the best I’ve ever been served outside of Melanie’s kitchen. It’s loaded with flavor and some awesome veggies that combines to take this stew to the next level.
We would have loved to try dessert but I couldn’t even hardly touch my pulled pork. I ended up taking it to work the next day along with some Carolina Gold which is a mustard-based vinegar sauce. Sixty seconds in the microwave and a tasty lunch was at hand.
