REVIEW: PURE taqueria, Brookhaven, DeKalb

PURE taqueria, Brookhaven, DeKalb

I confess. I love this trendy Mexican foodie genre. PURE taqueria did nothing but fan the flames that fuel that fire. We had a crowd from the office that was somehow convinced to leave their beloved cubicles for lunch. We theorized to take a late lunch, hoping to avoid the crowd. Our strategy worked. We got seated right away, met our server, soon had our drinks and we were looking over the menu.

PURE taqueria has a great vibe and we all commented how great it would be to meet here after work or on the weekends to watch games. They even have some great outdoor space on the deck upstairs that I will bet rocks in the summertime. This may have been our first visit, but I’m sure we’ll be returning here more often now.

Our regular readers know how I am strong on appetizers. I looking for something a little different and I really found it at PURE taqueria. I ordered the Tres Ceviches which is shrimp, grouper and octopus served crudo (yes, cold and raw). Now if that doesn’t sound like it appeals to you, you really have to try it. I was a little iffy about the octopus because when I’ve had this in the past it’s always been really chewy, but this was amazing. I soon began to look at the shrimp ceviche as boring, the grouper ceviche interesting and the octopus ceviche was big league goodness.

My buddy, who normally accompanies me for lunch, ordered the Burrito Americano and we both were stunned by the size of this dish. There was no way he was going to be able to eat the whole thing! He decided pretty early on that he was looking at both lunch and dinner.

I ordered the Tacos Pescado and I loved this dish, especially with the charro beans. The charro beans are pinto beans with a nice little kick to them. Even if you don’t like it hot, you’ll enjoy these because it isn’t a strong kick. The remoulade sauce that they use with the fish, complements the coleslaw and the fish well and overall this is a great meal.

PURE taqueria is the full package – plenty of parking, large dining areas, outdoor space, great service and superior food. I just wish we had one closer to home but there are six throughout the city, so chances are you probably have one near you. Guten appetit!
