REVIEW: Bone Island Grillhouse, Lake Oconee, Eatonton, Putnam County
One of our favorite getaway spots where we can enjoy a fantastic meal with awesome waterfront views is at Bone Island Grillhouse on the shores of Lake Oconee. We’ve been visiting here for a few years and now we are delighted to share this with our readers. We enjoyed a beautiful fall drive admiring the autumn leaves while rolling down Lake Oconee Parkway. We arrived just before they opened for dinner, giving us a nice chance to soak in the gorgeous weather. We walked down to the lake and then relaxed in the outdoor chairs surrounding the venue so we could take in the awesome vistas.
Get there early and you’ll beat the crowd because, on the weekends, the crowd starts early. Ask to be seated in one of the large booths on the far side of the dining room so you can get seating with a fantastic view of the lake. If you time it right, you might can catch a great sunset.
We started our meal with Catfish Poppers which are small pieces of catfish, lightly breaded and fried. This was an awesome start to our meal, but we were tempted by the Sausage Dip as well. Maybe next time we visit!
We each opted for a small side salad and we loved the mix of greens and the thick, rich dressing that came with it. In particular, we really liked the hearty, brown croutons that accompanied the salad.
The broad menu may give you difficult time in making a selection because everything looks so good! Melanie was toying with the idea of the Creek Burger and somehow Pimento Cheese came into the conversation. Our server kindly offered us a sample and it was fantastic! We’re going to have to see if we can get the recipe for that!
In the end, Melanie decided on the Fried Shrimp and I went with the Fried Catfish Fillet that had the same breading as the Catfish Poppers. Melanie subbed out her coleslaw for extra hush puppies and she was glad she did. The coleslaw has quite a kick to it, that I loved but Melanie would’ve NOT enjoyed. The fries were nothing special but the shrimp and the fish more than made up for it. The shrimp were generously sized and prepared perfectly. The catfish was tender yet maintained a wonderful consistency. I’m a big fan of catfish and this was delicious!
For Atlantans, the setting alone is worth the drive (about an hour and 15 mins from ATL) but the food and the excellent service will keep you coming back. It’s a favorite for the locals and for good reason – Bone Island Grillhouse is the full package. We’re sure to be back soon! Guten appetit!
