ROAD TRIP: Firefly, Panama City Beach, Florida
We absolutely LOVE taking suggestions from our readers! Especially when they are as SPOT-ON as the one from Anthony Miller, a PCB native, who wrote to us on Facebook and suggested we check out Firefly! OMG – it was divine!
We’d done our homework and read some reviews but nothing prepared us for when we found the GPS led us into a nondescript shopping center. I knew the pressure was on, because not only was this a recommendation, I was rolling the dice on our anniversary dinner. Yes, fellas – big brass ones, right?
We had called several hours ahead and made reservations because neither of us wanted to wait long if we didn’t have to. We arrived about 20 minutes before our reservation time and we were asked if we would like to wait in the library. The library? Really? Yes, it is regal, comfortable and made for one of the most excellent and memorable waiting areas I can ever recall in a restaurant.
We were soon seated near the center of the main dining area underneath a lighted artificial tree. While the setting may sound hokey as I’ve described it, it was really very, very nice. Our server greeted us and we immediately connected with her. She was really fantastic and took the time to talk to us throughout the meal without overdoing it. She made every effort to accommodate our every request during the meal and truly made it a special night for us.
Our first introduction at the greatness which was to come was when she brought the bread. Sounds simple, right? Four loaves of warm bread, but the delight in this was the various spreads that accompanied the bread. From top down, roasted garlic butter, tomato basil and then a sweet creamy butter.
We’d read other reviews praising the She Crab Soup and considering the poor experience that I had at Capt. Anderson’s the previous night, I was ready for the real deal. The She Crab Soup came in a large bowl with a puffed pastry floating on top. You are given the option to add a shot of sherry to it, and you should always say YES! My suggestion is to save the pastry for when you finish the soup so you can scrape every last bit of soup out with the pastry. It will save you the embarrassment from wanting to lick the bowl because the She Crab Soup is just THAT GOOD! Melanie and I commented to one another that it’s probably THE BEST She Crab Soup we have ever had ANYWHERE.
We both had ordered the Filet and Lobster Tail. After all, it was our anniversary, right? The presentation of this dish was excellent. I particularly liked the fried waffled potato chip sticking straight up out of the mashed potatoes. The Lobster Tail had been pulled out of the shell saving the diner from having to separate meat from shell. Drawn butter was brought with the meal, of course, and the lobster was done perfectly. Lobster is easily overdone and can become rubbery and overly chewy if not prepared correctly but this was just perfect. The Filet was an excellent cut of beef that hardly warranted the sizable steak knife brought to us. You could’ve cut it with a fork it was so tender. It practically melted in your mouth and it was seasoned perfectly. The vegetables accompanying it was a mixture of fall squash and had such a wonderful flavor that complemented the entire dish well.
The meal was so good, we really didn’t want our evening at Firefly to end, so when our server tempted us with dessert, there was no other decision to be made other than the affirmative. We decided on the Molten Lava Chocolate Cake which is a round chocolate cake and the center is a hot, melted chocolate ganache that is accompanied with vanilla bean ice cream. Mere words are unable to describe the goodness! We feared we’d be unable to finish it, but that problem never presented itself.
Yes, dear readers, civilization was discovered in Panama City Beach that night, thanks to Firefly. If you are looking for a real treat in fine dining in Panama City Beach, Firefly is a MUST VISIT on our list of best restaurants in Panama City Beach! Guten appetit!
