ROAD TRIP: Coffee Underground, Greenville SC

IMAG1557 IMAG1558

Readers, when they say Coffee Underground, they DO mean “underground”! The entrance is not too difficult to spot as the sign leads you downstairs and into the coffeehouse.

IMAG1559One thing you may notice on the way downstairs, is a small (life-size) bronze mouse. At first I thought it was your normal, run-of-the-mill plastic mouse intended as a joke. Upon closer examination, I soon found it was a bronze sculpture of extraordinary detail. It wasn’t until we had left Coffee Underground and strolled down the Mast General Store that we learned about Mice on Main, a scavenger hunt game for children to locate the mice scattered throughout the stores on Main Street.

My initial reaction entering the restaurant was a hint of claustrophobia with the seven foot ceilings but I figured that if I survived Double Decker Coffee Company in Asheville, I could certainly get through this. I soon relaxed and we ordered and found a comfortable place to sit. NOTE: It appears as if they really believe in sustainable living because the furniture looks as if it came from Goodwill. Some of it though, should go back. The love seat I sat on was quite well worn and NOT in the plush, comfortable way. Winking smile

Coffee Underground  has a very distinct vibe that is very, very relaxing. We just loved the atmosphere!

We were not starving but I did want a snack before we got back on the road and headed toward Atlanta so I ordered a Ham & IMAG1565Cheese sandwich with a small side side salad. The Ham & Chees is served on a croissant roll and normally comes with mustard but I chose mayonnaise. I opted for honey mustard on the salad. It was nearly 70 degrees so neither of us wanted hot coffee – Melanie IMAG1562chose a Mocha Frappuccino and I got a strawberry fruit smoothie. The food and the drinks were very good and we enjoyed them in excess. Time runs away quickly in Coffee Underground and we soon realized that if we were going to walk around downtown for a little while we needed to go.

When in Greenville, you should treat yourself to a trip to the Coffee Underground. You will not be disappointed! Guten appetit!
