When we had planned our schedule for Asheville, Tupelo Honey Café South was one that really caught my eye. They bill themselves as a “New South Kitchen” and I had in my mind visions of South City Kitchen and I was contemplating bliss for breakfast.
We had more friends coming into Asheville and we arranged to meet them at Tupelo Honey Café South, which opened at this location just a year ago capitalizing on the fame of it’s downtown location.
We were greeted, seated immediately and swiftly served refreshments. For starters, biscuits are provided. Now for those of our regular readers have seen the disappointment we’ve had with biscuits – at Tupelo Honey Café South THIS IS NOT THE CASE! These biscuits are BIG, FLUFFY and OH SO GOOD! THIS, my dear friends, is THE way biscuits should be made!
We all ordered breakfast with sides. Melanie ordered a veggie omelet and home fries. I ordered a cheddar omelet with jalapenos and homemade –hormone-free sausage with home fries and a side of goat cheese grits. Our friends ordered the Country Breakfast with two eggs done over easy. One was ordered with home fries and country ham. The other was with country ham and asparagus.
This is the new genre of southern restaurants, “new south”, and one of the key elements of such is farm-fresh food – from the farm to the table – locally grown and locally sourced. For diners, this transpires into fresh, quality food and we can also appreciate serving and helping our local economy.
Tupelo Honey Café South was a really treat! The food is wonderfully prepared, everything is fresh and full of flavor. The staff provided for our every need and provided exceptional service using a team serving style. Tupelo Honey Café South is a MUST SEE for Asheville! Guten appetit!
