Last Resort Grill, Athens, GA
Nestled snugly in downtown Athens is a small restaurant with a large crowd called Last Resort Grill. We had tried to come here before but the wait was well over an hour and sadly we chose to go across the street to Casa Mia instead. After that experience, we promised ourselves we would ALWAYS wait it out – no matter how long the wait.
In retrospect, I think we grasped the reality that any place with a wait is worth waiting for. However, I had called early to make reservations but was told instead that we could do call-ahead seating. When we arrived we were seated right away although Last Resort Grill was near capacity.
We soon had our drinks and our server was absolutely wonderful, although I failed to catch her name. We watched the staff throughout our meal and they are totally dedicated to serving the customer. It was refreshing to watch them work together as a team. It reminded us that the restaurant business is not rocket science but when you are serving that many guests at one time you need to have your act together and Last Resort Grill does.
We decided to start our meal with the soup of the day, which was Beer Cheddar. Although the texture was grainy, the flavor was superb and we loved it. It was especially delightful with the fresh, hot bread served at the beginning of our meal. Salads quickly followed and the dressings are all homemade. I chose the vidalia bacon and Melanie selected the gorgonzola. Both were deliciously rich, creamy and oozed flavor!
For our main course, Melanie chose the Firecracker Filet – “fire-grilled cracked black pepper crusted beef tenderloin served with our homemade mashed potatoes & asparagus, topped with onion rings & a rosemary compound butter”. I opted for the Pecan Crusted Blue Trout – “fresh farm-raised North Georgia trout dusted with pecan flour, blue cornmeal and pecans, sautéed in white wine, topped with a dijon honey butter & served with our lentil rice and veggie”.
Last Resort Grill lived up to its reputation (rated #1 in Athens for fine dining on Urbanspoon) and far exceeded our expectations. The filet was cooked perfectly and simply melted in your mouth. The trout was wonderfully exciting as I cannot recall anything quite like it before. It exuded flavor although the pecans were almost a little too nutty. We decided our meal was wonderful and the service was out of this world!
The only negatives was concerned us about Last Resort Grill was that it was a little dark, which for the most part is okay (I understand ambience) but the table should be lit well enough to be able to read the menu and the check. The other negative was the restaurant is tight. If you are claustrophobic, you may have trouble for an extended period of time.
If I haven’t been complimentary enough and given you a few pearls for dining at Last Resort Grill, allow me to extend yet one last piece of advice – don’t leave without dessert. Choose either one of the many flavors of cheesecake or triple-layer cakes they have to choose from – they DO NOT disappoint!
We really LOVED Last Resort Grill! The menu selection was unique, the food flavorful and well-prepared, the service was dynamite. You CANNOT go wrong dining at Last Resort Grill – it’s a MUST SEE! Guten appetit!
