ROAD TRIP: Boondocks Bar & Grille, Summerland Key, FL

Boondock’s is a huge place once you enter Ramrod Key. It sports a large restaurant (expanding even more with additional construction when we visited) and hosts it’s own miniature gold course as well.

We’d been sightseeing and shopping in Key West all day and were pretty tired by the time we got to the restaurant but once we walked in we got our second wind fast. With the wooden floor and thatched roof we felt as if we were in an island hut (which we were – just a BIG hut! Winking smile)

IMAG1121The staff was very friendly and, even though they were packed, we were seated right away. I had been seeing signs about conch fritters (pronounced KONK). So what is a conch? Yes, it’s basically an overgrown snail in a big shell. A conch fritter, they fry that thing up and you end up with something that is similar to calamari. It was actually pretty good! This explains why when the picture was taken there was only one left.Surprised smile

Melanie and I both ordered the Shrimp and Mahi Mahi combos fried. The batter on the shrimp was very different and was really great. The fried mahi mahi was a new one on us but it came off well and was quite tasty.

One of the more pleasant surprises of the night was a band called The Doerfuls. These kids range from 13-20 and are a family of musicians. It would not surprise me if these guys were the next hit in Nashville. They have a really distinctive style and mix in a blend of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and other classic rock. It is absolutely CRAZY and they pull it off in style. You HAVE to check them out! The lead singer is a 20 year old girl who plays fiddle and sings and she is an awesome performer.

Boondocks ended up being a great place which we enjoyed very much. Guten appetit!
